At the recent AI and Society Forum at MIT, experts discussed the potential benefits and dangers of technological innovation on labor, the nature of work, civil discourse, election administration, and more. The event included individual research presentations, panel discussions, and a musical performance exploring generative artificial intelligence in the arts.
Co-organized by the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (SHASS) and the Social and Ethical Responsibilities of Computing (SERC), it collaborated with MIT’s Generative AI Impact Consortium (MGAIC) and the MIT Human Insight Collaborative (MITHIC). Agustín Rayo, the dean of SHASS, emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary expertise in understanding AI’s societal impact. Huttenlocher highlighted that the rapid growth of computing and AI necessitates support for interdisciplinary conversations and research.
The forum, held in MIT’s Tull Concert Hall, began with a keynote from economist David Autor, who challenged the narrative that AI merely eliminates jobs. He suggested that technology's impact varies based on its effect on the scarcity and value of human expertise.
Autor argued that AI may create new specialized jobs, necessitating proactive policies for worker training, wage insurance, and broader capital ownership. A panel discussion followed, addressing how work is changing and its implications for society. Daniela Rus from CSAIL described the excitement around AI enhancing workplaces while stressing the critical role of human judgment in decision-making.
The second session focused on AI’s impact on democracy, featuring Chara Podimata’s research on auditing large language models for bias in election information. Her longitudinal study revealed significant variations in chatbot responses based on demographics and political leanings.
Experts expressed concerns about AI eroding democratic norms but also acknowledged its potential positive outcomes. Lily Tsai emphasized the necessity of adhering to democratic principles in AI design to ensure its positive impact on democracy.
