The path to launching a startup is often filled with twists and turns. Gaining insights from those who have traversed this journey can be invaluable for budding entrepreneurs. John Hart, head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at MIT, emphasizes the importance of sharing entrepreneurial stories among alumni to inspire current students. As noted in a 2015 MIT report, over 30,000 active companies founded by alumni employ around 4.6 million people worldwide.

The ‘Founder’s Journey’ course explores the real-world challenges faced by hardware startups. Each week focuses on a key issue, featuring guest speakers who are founders from various sectors like robotics and 3D printing. Students engage by preparing questions and participating in discussions.

Co-led by senior lecturer Ken Zolot and Hart, the course aims to ignite students' entrepreneurial energy. Alumni speakers include Mick Mountz from Kiva/Amazon and Jon Hirschtick from SolidWorks/Onshape. Colin Angle, co-founder of iRobot, shared his journey of transforming ideas into reality, highlighting MIT's hands-on ethos.

Elise Strobach, co-founder of AeroShield, discussed the innovative applications of her transparent aerogel technology. Maxim Lobovsky, CEO of Formlabs, reflected on the importance of seizing opportunities in entrepreneurship. Jon Hirschtick discussed CAD software’s role in product development, linking startups to problem-solving. These narratives not only showcase successful outcomes but also offer valuable insights for future entrepreneurs.
