Emery Brown, a member of the MIT faculty since 2005, is the Edward Hood Taplin Professor of Medical Engineering and Computational Neuroscience. His research focuses on how anesthesia affects the brain, developing statistical methods to characterize human circadian rhythms and revealing how anesthetic drugs alter brain oscillations. He has created a closed-loop anesthesia delivery system capable of real-time EEG monitoring to guide anesthetic dosing during surgery.
Daniel Hastings, the Cecil (1923) and Ida Green Professor in Education, has made significant contributions to astronautical engineering, particularly in space plasma interactions and electric propulsion systems. His work has informed NASA’s design of solar panels for the International Space Station, ensuring their safe operation in space.
Douglas Lauffenburger, the Ford Professor of Biological Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Biology, founded MIT’s Department of Biological Engineering. His research spans cell signaling mechanisms, employing computational modeling and quantitative experiments to understand processes such as cell proliferation and migration.
