Leadership design is a complex challenge that requires the combination of multiple disciplines of knowledge and skills. Nicholas de Monchaux, during his tenure as the head of the Department of Architecture at the School of Architecture and Planning (SA+P), faced unique leadership conditions. When he took on the role in 2020, he had to adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic and find new solutions for remote work and online teaching. De Monchaux's research focuses on adaptive complex systems and design theory. He believes that design can solve complex problems through continuous adaptation and innovation. His first book, "Spacesuit: Fashioning Apollo", explores the design process of the Apollo spacesuit, highlighting the collaborative effort of materials, manufacturing practices, and institutional networks. De Monchaux also introduced the concept of "Local Code", using geospatial data to analyze vacant lots in cities and propose alternative urban planning schemes. He argues that architectural education and research need to combine complexity science and design theory to address real-world problems.
