[Core Tech] MIT Quantum Initiative Launches Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

The MIT Quantum Initiative (QMIT) has introduced a postdoctoral fellowship program to accelerate interdisciplinary quantum research and develop the next generation of leaders at the frontier of quantum science and technology. Supported by a grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the program reflects QMIT’s vision of expanding quantum science boundaries by linking quantum approaches with other disciplines and emerging applications.

As opportunities in quantum research grow, investing in outstanding early‑career scientists becomes crucial. The fellowships provide resources and a collaborative environment to advance transformative research at MIT. MIT provost Anantha Chandrakasan notes that quantum science is in an unprecedented period of opportunity, opening new pathways for computation, materials, sensing, and communication.

Launched in December 2025 as an MIT strategic initiative, QMIT brings together researchers across the Institute to speed quantum discovery and apply advances to societal, technological, industrial, and national‑security challenges. Chemistry Professor Danna Freedman, faculty director of QMIT, emphasizes that quantum science is increasingly interdisciplinary, and the most exciting breakthroughs will arise from combining deep quantum expertise with perspectives from other fields.

The fellowship is deliberately built for an interdisciplinary community, targeting outstanding quantum researchers in physics, chemistry, materials science, as well as fundamental biology and Earth science, who are eager to explore new intellectual frontiers. One example is using quantum systems to deepen understanding of biological processes, merging atomic physics, quantum algorithms, and biology.

Fellows will be embedded across QMIT’s core research areas—quantum computing, quantum sensing and precision measurement, quantum materials, quantum simulation, and quantum networks—and may also explore intersections of artificial intelligence and quantum science. They will join MIT’s extensive quantum ecosystem, collaborating with the Research Laboratory of Electronics, MIT Lincoln Laboratory, the Physics Department, the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department, the MIT‑Harvard Center for Ultracold Atoms, and numerous interdisciplinary centers.

Beyond supporting individual projects, the program aims to strengthen MIT’s broader quantum community through cross‑disciplinary collaboration, mentorship, and intellectual exchange. MIT vice‑president for research and QMIT head Ian Waitz states that quantum research will make the impossible possible in the coming years, and the fellowship is an investment in outstanding postdoctoral scholars who will drive innovative quantum capabilities into science and technology.

The inaugural QMIT Fellows will begin their appointments in the 2026 academic year, with a new cohort expected to open for applications in fall 2026, continuing to build a community of researchers working across disciplines to advance the future of quantum science.
