The MIT Quantum Initiative (QMIT), funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, has introduced a postdoctoral fellowship program to accelerate interdisciplinary quantum research and nurture the next generation of scientific leaders at the frontier of quantum science and technology. Launched in December 2025 as an MIT strategic initiative, the program brings together researchers across the Institute to speed up quantum discovery and apply quantum advances to major challenges in computation, materials, sensing, and communication.\ \ MIT provost and Vannevar Bush Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Anantha Chandrakasan notes that quantum science is in an extraordinary period of opportunity, and the program will help MIT attract researchers whose ideas will shape the field’s future. Chemistry Professor Danna Freedman adds that quantum science is becoming increasingly interdisciplinary, and the most exciting breakthroughs will come from those who combine deep quantum expertise with perspectives from other fields.\ \ The fellowship targets outstanding postdoctoral researchers with strong quantum backgrounds in physics, chemistry, materials science, as well as fundamental biology and Earth sciences, who are eager to explore new intellectual frontiers. One interdisciplinary vision is applying quantum systems to better understand biological processes, merging atomic physics, quantum algorithms, and biology. Fellows will be embedded in research areas such as quantum computing, quantum sensing and precision measurement, quantum materials, quantum simulation, and quantum networks, and may also pursue emerging approaches that combine artificial intelligence with quantum science.\ \ Supported fellows will join MIT’s extensive quantum ecosystem, collaborating with the Research Laboratory of Electronics, MIT Lincoln Laboratory, the Department of Physics, the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, the MIT‑Harvard Center for Ultracold Atoms, and numerous interdisciplinary research centers and labs. Beyond individual projects, the fellowship aims to strengthen MIT’s broader quantum community through collaboration, mentorship, and intellectual exchange across disciplines.\ \ MIT vice president for research and QMIT head Ian Waitz emphasizes that quantum research will make the impossible possible across many domains in the coming years, and the fellowship is an investment in outstanding postdoctoral scholars who will bring transformative quantum capabilities to science and technology. The inaugural QMIT Fellows will begin their appointments in the 2026 academic year, with a new cohort expected to open for applications in fall 2026, continuing to build a cross‑disciplinary quantum research community.\ \ Review
