The MIT Sandbox Innovation Fund Program was launched in 2016 under Ian Waitz, then dean of the School of Engineering, to lower the barrier for MIT students to try entrepreneurship. Open to undergraduates, graduate students and PhDs, Sandbox awards $500‑$5,000 seed grants, pairs each team with two mentors, and allows successful teams to request up to $25,000 in follow‑on funding. Jacob Becraft experienced two failed startup attempts as a graduate student before Sandbox’s “fail fast” model enabled his third swing: co‑founding Strand Therapeutics. Strand’s programmable mRNA drug has shrunk tumors in patients who had exhausted other options and has raised $550 million. Becraft describes Sandbox as giving him “the freedom and ability to fail fast,” allowing him to travel, conduct market research, meet experts, and eventually secure investors for a vision that could transform medicine.

Sandbox collaborates closely with MIT I‑Corps, the Martin Trust Center, the Venture Mentoring Service, and other campus initiatives, giving students the space to turn deep‑tech research into commercial ventures. Over its first decade, Sandbox has supported more than 4,000 teams (about 8,000 participants), disbursed over $11 million in non‑dilutive funding, and helped launch 475 companies in more than 30 countries. Those companies have collectively raised $8.7 billion in venture capital.

Sandbox’s impact is also evident in MIT’s $100K Entrepreneurship Competition, where nine out of ten winners were Sandbox participants. Founding executive director Jinane Abounadi emphasizes that Sandbox provides not just money but a community, mentorship, and a “home” for experimentation, enabling students to see themselves as creators of meaningful global impact. Engineering Dean Paula T. Hammond echoes this sentiment, noting that students gain confidence, learn to iterate before scaling, and ultimately strengthen both their own trajectories and the broader MIT ecosystem.
