Longfin squid (Doryteuthis pealeii) has long been a staple of New England fisheries. In 2023 Massachusetts landed about 2.85 million lb, worth $2.82 million, ranking among the top ten species; 2024 catches fell to roughly 0.75 million lb and biomass hit a historic low.
The animal lives only six to nine months, making its population highly responsive to temperature and nutrient shifts, so large year‑to‑year swings are normal. NOAA’s Northeast Fisheries Science Center now runs several initiatives—a two‑year life‑history study, the SQUIBS sampling program, SQUISM size monitoring, and the interdisciplinary Squid‑Squad—to track maturity and spawning readiness.
MIT Sea Grant resident artist Keith Ellenbogen chartered a boat in 2023 and dived 30‑40 ft into Cape Cod’s emerald‑green water. He filmed a dense spawning aggregation: hundreds of squid circling a pale egg mass, their bodies flashing rust‑red, golden, pink and white, like a underwater theater.
Squid hatch as 1.5 mm paralarvae that already resemble miniature adults and grow explosively. They hunt small crustaceans and even other squid using jet propulsion and ten grasping arms. Chromatophore cells, controlled by the nervous system, produce rapid color changes for camouflage, courtship and communication, although the animals are essentially colour‑blind, detecting only contrast, brightness and polarization.
Sexual maturity is reached at about 8 cm mantle length; thereafter they migrate offshore to overwinter in deeper, warmer waters. At night they form size‑segregated schools that rise to feed. Males grow faster than females. Spawning occurs year‑round with a peak from May to August in New England. Females lay fertilized capsules containing 150‑200 eggs each, returning repeatedly to deposit 3‑6 thousand eggs over several weeks on shells and seaweed.
Mating is a mix of “consort” large males guarding a female and “sneaker” small males that slip in. Females can store sperm, so a single capsule may contain contributions from multiple males. Visual and chemical cues—rapid colour shifts, white flashes, body postures—mediate competition; a 1999 study catalogued 34 colour displays and 17 specific movements, with white flashes often signalling aggression.
Ellenbogen’s rare footage bridges art and science, revealing a hidden reproductive spectacle and underscoring the longfin squid’s role in Massachusetts’ marine productivity. MIT Sea Grant leverages such work to promote sustainable fisheries and coastal stewardship.
