A MIT team has introduced a dual‑purpose qubit architecture that separates data storage from interaction. The device consists of a data mode with long coherence and an arm mode that couples to other qubits and to a readout resonator.

Both modes are linked by a previously developed quarton coupler, providing strong nonlinear coupling that suppresses unwanted mixing and speeds up gate operations.

Simulations show that the arm qubit retains state‑of‑the‑art coherence while delivering faster gates and readout, allowing more operations before decoherence and thus reducing error rates—an important step toward quantum error correction.

The researchers now aim to fabricate the qubit, test the predictions experimentally, and integrate it into real quantum circuits. The work is funded by the Army Research Office, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research and other agencies.
