Earth's largest volcanic system, hidden beneath the ocean, has long been thought to erupt quietly. However, the shallow seafloor off Iceland tells a different story. In June 2024, Ph.D. student Jonas Preine and his research team aboard the research vessel Meteor observed unexpected volcanic structures in the North Atlantic. Their goal was to explore an uncharted deep-water basin dotted with volcanic shapes, but the seismic images collected revealed a starkly different scenario than the usually quiet oceanic volcanoes. These smooth volcanic mounds featured steep sides and flat tops, with deposits resembling remnants from an eruption.

Iceland is a geological marvel, situated on a mid-ocean ridge. The researchers discovered that the critical depth for explosive eruptions is around 300 meters, where water pressure typically suppresses such activity. The sudden emergence of the volcanic island Surtsey in 1963 provides crucial insight into these phenomena. Scientists propose that as glaciers retreat, the pressure on the Earth's crust decreases, potentially leading to increased volcanic activity.

While the current theories remain unconfirmed, researchers believe that further evidence could unveil more secrets of undersea volcanoes. As Preine noted, these findings suggest that under specific conditions, Iceland's underwater volcanoes may suddenly become active, forming new volcanic islands.
