Uber Limits Employee AI Spending

Recently, Uber has decided to cap employee AI spending after exhausting its entire annual AI budget in just four months. According to Bloomberg, the company has instituted a new rule that places a monthly spending cap of $1,500 per employee and per agentic coding tool, including Anthropic's Claude Code or Cursor. Usage is trackable via an internal dashboard accessible to each employee, although exceeding the cap may be permitted with company approval in certain cases.

This news is perhaps not surprising, as Uber's CTO revealed in April that the ridesharing giant had spent its entire budget shortly after encouraging staff to use AI "as much as possible" and even ranked their internal usage competitively on leaderboards. Uber's COO, Andrew Macdonald, recently expressed doubts about AI's productivity impact, noting during a podcast appearance that "it's very hard to draw a line" between AI usage and new consumer features.

Uber's cutback raises a broader issue that the tech industry is currently facing: As enterprises pour money into AI, what exactly is the return on investment? Indeed, AI ROI has so far remained a largely theoretical phenomenon that everybody hopes will eventually materialize, although some companies are obviously getting a little restless while they wait.

Blogger's Review: Uber's move highlights the real challenges tech firms face in the pursuit of AI. While the potential of AI is enormous, converting it into actual productivity and profits remains a pressing issue. Companies must reassess the rationale behind AI spending to avoid wasteful resource allocation.
