Carter Stubbs has been appointed MIT’s Institute auditor, effective Nov. 2. Stubbs currently serves as audit assistant director for IT Audit and Advisory Services, has been with MIT for over 11 years, and brings deep institutional knowledge, extensive management experience, and a forward‑looking vision. He succeeds Michael Moody, who led the role for 12 years and will retire in October. Executive Vice President and Treasurer Glen Shor announced the appointment in a letter to the Academic Council, noting that Stubbs stood out for his audit and IT expertise, collaborative leadership style, and strong grasp of MIT’s complex operations, earning trust from colleagues inside and outside the division. As Institute auditor, Stubbs will lead a team of internal auditors to independently evaluate MIT’s academic, research, and administrative processes, including Lincoln Laboratory, covering financial, operational, compliance, and technology reviews in a risk‑based program. The Audit Division maintains a dual reporting structure: the team reports to the MIT Corporation Risk and Audit Committee while receiving administrative support from the Executive Vice President’s office. Risk and Audit Committee chair Pat Callahan said Stubbs’s technical command of IT auditing and hands‑on experience with major system implementations will be valuable as MIT advances its business and digital transformation roadmap. Stubbs joined MIT in 2015 as a senior IT auditor, progressively taking responsibility for IT, data analytics, and advisory services; he now leads those functions and sits on the division’s management team. He helps shape annual risk assessments, audit planning, and broader strategy, oversees complex engagements, drives quality assurance, and responds proactively to emerging needs. He works closely with leaders across MIT’s academic, research, administrative, and technology units, including Lincoln Laboratory, facilitating governance communication. Over his tenure he built an extensive partner network, gained a multifaceted understanding of MIT’s operating model, higher‑education and research risks, and the leadership judgment needed to navigate complex institutional matters, contributing to cross‑Institute initiatives in research data management, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and digital transformation. A 2025 graduate of MIT’s Leader‑to‑Leader program, Stubbs served as an advisor to the MIT Working Group on Artificial Intelligence in Administration and Operations and is a member of the MIT Data Incident Response Team. The Audit Division plays an essential role in advancing the Institute’s mission through independent insight, trusted partnership, and thoughtful risk perspective. I look forward to building on its strong foundation and helping MIT navigate an increasingly complex regulatory and risk environment.” Prior to MIT, Stubbs held audit roles at Clean Harbors, Denbury Resources, and PwC, developing broad expertise in IT and business‑process controls across multiple industries. He holds CIA and CISA certifications and earned a BBA in information and operations management from Texas A&M University.
