U.S. News & World Report announced today that MIT tops the 2026‑27 national university rankings. The survey evaluates a range of academic specialties, and MIT leads in engineering, computer science, economics and business.\ \ In engineering, MIT’s undergraduate program ranks first overall and holds the top spot in aerospace, chemical, electrical, materials and mechanical engineering, while computer engineering is second. The other schools in the top five are Georgia Tech, Stanford, UC Berkeley and Caltech.\ \ In computer science, MIT shares first place in biocomputing, computer systems and theory, and second place in artificial intelligence, data analytics and programming languages. Carnegie Mellon ties for first in the three top categories. The remaining top‑five programs include Stanford, UC Berkeley, Georgia Tech, Princeton and UIUC.\ \ In economics, MIT is first in development economics, econometrics, industrial organization and microeconomics, and second in macroeconomics. Harvard, Princeton and the University of Chicago tie for first, with Stanford, UC Berkeley and Yale also in the top five.\ \ For business, MIT Sloan leads in analytics, production/operations management and quantitative analysis, and is second in entrepreneurship.
