With Harvey and Legora rapidly completing eight-figure funding rounds, legal tools have become one of the fastest-growing and most competitive sectors among AI startups. However, while these tools focus on private practice, some startups believe there is still a large portion of the legal market that remains underserved. Sandstone announced $30 million in Series A funding on Tuesday, targeting the complex tasks and systems faced by in-house legal teams. The Series A was led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, with participation from existing investors including Mantis VC, SV Angel, Operator Partners, Kearny Jackson, Daybreak Ventures, and Litquidity Ventures. This funding comes just six months after a $10 million seed round in January, led by Sequoia. According to the founders, Sandstone's initial user base will consist of legal departments in small and mid-sized businesses. "They open up their laptops in the morning and see all the work that has come in through various intake channels, whether that’s Slack messages, emails, or Jira," co-founder and COO Jarryd Strydom told TechCrunch. "AI helps them route and triage that work appropriately, and then they can build custom workflows on top of our platform to actually execute work, whether that’s drafting, reviewing, or providing legal analysis." Unlike legal reasoning systems like Harvey and Legora, Sandstone focuses on relationship management and workflow automation tailored to the unique demands of in-house legal work. Strydom believes that focusing on in-house legal departments allows Sandstone to provide value where more generalized AI deployments often struggle. "One of Lightspeed's convictions was that they really believe in highly specialized vertical AI," Strydom said, "because it takes a granular understanding of workflows to really nail down how AI can help." Sandstone will also face fierce competition from frontier AI labs, which are increasingly turning their attention to the legal space. Anthropic has been steadily expanding its Claude for Legal offering, adding new tools in May for case law searches and deposition prep.

Blogger's Review: Sandstone's success hinges not only on its ability to secure funding but also on its deep understanding of corporate legal workflows. By focusing on in-house legal teams, Sandstone has the potential to carve out a niche in the highly competitive legal tech market. Its AI-driven workflow automation solution could be a critical tool for enhancing legal efficiency.
