The study also pointed out that these AI models are particularly prone to errors in emotionally charged breaking news situations, such as the recent assassination attempt on Trump and significant events in the Iran war. Additionally, the reliability and bias issues of the original human-generated news content used to train AI models exacerbate this problem.
Researchers stated that the way AI interacts with users determines whether its impact is “as a coach or a crutch.” The study found that certain conversational strategies could more effectively support users' active learning and skill development. For instance, AI employing the Socratic questioning method was better at motivating users to independently identify the truth, while AI providing direct answers was more likely to lead to dependency.
Despite the study's sample size being only about 50 verified news items, primarily focused on the U.S. and the U.K., the research team hopes to conduct similar experiments in more geographically diverse groups in the future and explore the effectiveness of other multimodal interaction strategies. Ultimately, the research aims to provide educators with insights when integrating AI tools into curricula, enhancing students' awareness of the limitations of AI as a learning tool.
