Legal scholar Martha Minow delivered the Compton Lecture at MIT, warning that democracy and constitutionalism face unprecedented strain and that AI is both a danger and a possible support.

She framed democracy around four “ingredients”: education, reliable information, security, and fairness, citing a Gallup poll where 77% of respondents think the U.S. founders would be disappointed with today’s nation.

In education, AI risks widening existing funding and racial gaps and eroding independent thinking. She noted that dominant AI platforms amplify social‑media tactics that promote passivity, harming memory and critical reasoning.

She suggested re‑imagining AI as a tutor‑like tool that offers nudges, questions, and hints instead of full answers, thereby deepening student thought and reducing cheating.

Regarding information, she urged technologists to build an “information commons” that supplies reliable, verifiable news to counter the corruption that follows media decline.

On security, she highlighted that many U.S. judges face credible threats of violence and called for stronger protections of judicial independence.

Her fairness concerns target societal stratification, emphasizing that technological innovation should foster more equitable community relations.

During the Q&A, Minow expressed worry about the loss of Enlightenment values—reason, evidence‑based testing, and tolerance—arguing that restoring these through education and information reform is essential for democracy.

She concluded with “We have to actually invent the world that we want to live in,” encouraging MIT scholars to devote talent to AI governance solutions.
