MIT researchers have created an implantable drug‑delivery system aimed at reducing recurrence of glioblastoma. The device holds roughly 100 µL of fluid in a reservoir, releases the drug via a passive osmotic pump, and incorporates a 24‑element ultrasound array at the needle tip. Ultrasound generates local convective flow and temporarily opens the blood‑brain barrier, allowing molecules to travel farther into the tissue.\ \ During surgery the implant is placed in the brain while the battery and control electronics remain outside the skull. A Bluetooth link lets clinicians program ultrasound dosage wirelessly, and the battery can be recharged inductively. Tests in a tissue‑mimicking gel and in mice, using a drug and an MRI contrast agent respectively, showed markedly wider distribution when the ultrasound array was activated compared with passive diffusion alone.\ \ Beyond small‑molecule chemotherapy, the platform could deliver immunotherapies, nucleic acids or gene‑editing cargos, and may be adapted for other soft‑tissue organs. The system merges a hair‑thin cannula previously developed by Dagdeviren’s group with the ImPULS ultrasonic stimulation technology, resulting in LUCID (Long‑term Ultrasound‑enhanced Convective Injection Device), a flexible sheet‑like implant.\ \ The work, funded by the MIT Media Lab Consortium and the NIH, lists Dagdeviren, graduate students Sarah Ornellas and Jason Hou, and collaborators from Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital as co‑authors.\ \ Review
