Abstract
The Muddy Children Puzzle is a puzzle about knowledge and ignorance that has significantly influenced the development of epistemic logic. The origin of the puzzle remains unclear. This paper traces the origin of the Muddy Children Puzzle through logical and literary publications over the past two centuries. The puzzle has inspired numerous variations, such as those involving numbers or colored hats. We also present a novel hats puzzle involving self-reference.
