Every summer for the past 13 years, MIT's dynaMIT Club has provided free STEM education to middle school students in the Boston area, aiming to inspire the next generation of innovators. In August, dynaMIT will welcome two cohorts of middle schoolers. The first group of 40 students in grades 6–7 will engage in hands-on STEM learning through creative activities such as solar s'mores and paper rockets.

The following week, another 40 students in grades 8–9 will explore innovative experiments that spark curiosity and creative problem-solving.

Each day covers a new topic, exposing attendees to chemistry, machine learning, physics, math, biology, and earth and space science. Several program attendees have successfully applied to and been accepted by MIT, including co-director Dominique Dang. Dang, from Quincy, Massachusetts, stated, "I didn’t receive a lot of STEM exposure in middle school, but I was really interested after seeing the dynaMIT program online. It introduced me to creating things, not just reading about them in a textbook. I knew I wanted to be a scientist, but I didn’t know what type of science I wanted to study, so dynaMIT's exposure to different STEM topics each day was transformative for me."

Megan Zhu, the other co-director, is passionate about the organization’s educational mission. As a biology major aspiring to pursue an MD/PhD program, Zhu expressed her commitment to advancing science education. "I happened to stop by the dynaMIT table at the club fair, and it seemed really cool. I spoke to a couple of the club leaders, and they discussed how they support education in the Boston area."

Lukeman Nouri, who attended dynaMIT as a sixth grader, shared his experience: "I barely knew what MIT was or even what STEM meant, but that changed after the first day! I remember extracting DNA from a strawberry, making elephant toothpaste, and gathering fingerprints. My biggest highlight was learning Scratch and creating my first game." Nouri is now majoring in computer science and engineering.

Erick Liang, who grew up in Boston's Chinatown and Roslindale, also had a similar experience. He remarked, "As a first-generation, low-income student, having a meaningful and engaging program like dynaMIT was crucial for me. It exposed me to different fields of science I hadn’t encountered in elementary or middle school and sparked my interest in STEM."

Zhu mentioned that this year they are adding a new climate change and clean water activity that aims to create interest in these critical areas. "One of our activities is called Sponge City, focusing on runoff and clean, reusable water. Students will build a city that can withstand a storm while managing a budget to decide how to allocate resources."

The club is also partnering with the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at MIT, where attendees will tour lab space and conduct experiments on cell heterogeneity and cancer tumor formation. Nouri expressed his excitement about giving this cohort the same great experience he had six years ago. Liang added, "I’m excited to help set up the plasma demo kits for the program’s physics day!"

"It’s a great full-circle moment," said Dang. "That’s one of the reasons why I joined the club." Zhu concluded, "Watching the students work on activities is always the most rewarding part of the two weeks, making the entire year of planning worthwhile."

Students interested in joining dynaMIT or volunteering for this summer’s program can find more information on the club’s website.

Blogger's Review: The dynaMIT Club is not just a spark for STEM education; it is a cradle for nurturing future scientists. Through hands-on activities, students find their passion and direction, achieving a true legacy of educational innovation. Such programs deserve to be emulated and promoted by more universities.
