Susumu Tonegawa, the Picower Professor of Biology and Neuroscience at MIT and a Nobel laureate, passed away on July 11 at the age of 86. Renowned for his keen insights in various fields, including immunology and neuroscience, Tonegawa discovered how the immune system generates its incredible diversity of antibodies in the early 1980s, earning him the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1987.

Following this landmark achievement, he turned his attention to neuroscience, revealing how the brain stores memories as traces known as "engrams." As a faculty member at MIT for over 40 years, Tonegawa also served as the founding director of the Picower Institute for Learning and Memory and the director of the RIKEN Brain Science Institute in Japan.

Born in Nagoya, Japan, Tonegawa's early years were spent moving between rural towns due to his father's job. He developed an interest in chemistry during high school and later pursued studies at the University of Kyoto. He began his graduate studies at the Institute for Virus Research but was advised to apply to a U.S. institution with advanced molecular biology programs, leading him to the University of California at San Diego.

At the Basel Institute for Immunology in Switzerland, Tonegawa became fascinated by the question of antibody diversity, ultimately discovering that antibody proteins are not encoded by individual genes but by randomly recombining genes for different components. He received the Nobel Prize for this discovery, known as V(D)J gene rearrangement, in 1987.

In 1981, Tonegawa accepted a professorship at MIT's Center for Cancer Research, where he began studying T cells and their receptor diversity. He also explored neuroscience questions, becoming the founding director of the Center for Learning and Memory in 1994.

Over the past two decades, Tonegawa's lab made significant discoveries in memory research. In 2013, they identified "engrams" in the hippocampus, encoding elements related to specific experiences. His research also demonstrated the possibility of implanting "false memories" in mice using optogenetics.

In addition to the Nobel Prize, Tonegawa received numerous awards, including the Albert and Mary Lasker Award for Basic Research in 1987. He was known for training many of today's neuroscience leaders.

A long-time fan of the Boston Red Sox, Tonegawa had the honor of throwing the ceremonial first pitch at Fenway Park in 2004. His passing leaves a significant void in the scientific community, and his legacy will continue to influence neuroscience for years to come.
