On Monday, Amazon launched a new feature that allows users to design merchandise using AI, posing a significant challenge to online merch platforms like Redbubble and Bonfire. Users can create new products using AI prompts via the Alexa feature in the Amazon Shopping app, turning their ideas into designs for items ranging from apparel to tumblers, all through Amazon's print-on-demand service, Merch on Demand. This service is particularly useful for printing one-off designs, such as T-shirts for family reunions or personalized gifts, or even products featuring portraits of pets. Amazon states that after the design prompt, they will handle production and delivery through Prime shipping. This move integrates AI-generated merchandise directly into the Amazon Shopping app, lowering the barrier for consumers to turn ideas into physical products. While print-on-demand businesses have typically catered to creators and organizations, Amazon's new feature could make AI-designed merchandise just another shopping option. Currently, the option is only available in the U.S., and it is free to use; customers only pay for the products themselves. To use the feature, customers tap the Alexa icon in the bottom right of the Amazon Shopping app or search for 'customize' in the search bar and select the drop-down option. This leads users into an experience where they can describe their idea to Alexa and see the generated design. Users can then edit the design by clicking on suggested actions or typing in changes. The results can be shared with friends or family, allowing everyone to add the product to their own Amazon shopping carts. The full list of supported merchandise includes T-shirts, V-necks, long-sleeve shirts, polo shirts, quarter zips, jerseys, hoodies, sweatshirts, tank tops, tumblers, and water bottles.

Blogger's Review: Amazon's initiative not only expands the design possibilities for consumers but may also reshape the personalized market landscape. However, the copyright issues surrounding AI-generated content must be closely monitored, especially regarding how artists' rights are protected, which will directly influence the sustainability of this feature.
